Preoperative preparation begins when your attending surgeon recommends surgery and provides you with more information about the planned procedure and potential complications. It is a series of tests performed before surgery to assess your health, evaluate your body's ability to withstand operative stress and identify potential risks.
You can schedule preoperative preparation by calling 011/7359156 or 011/7359157 at Euromedik General Hospital, Bulevar umetnosti 29, Belgrade.
Preoperative preparation takes at least an hour and includes a check-up by a cardiologist and an anaesthesiologist. Additional specialists will be consulted for the preoperative assessment if necessary. The minimal procedures include a medical exam, an interview, laboratory tests (such as blood counts, biochemical analyses, coagulation status, and urinalyses), the determination of blood groups and Rh factors, chest X-rays, an ECG, and an EHO of the heart.
Bring all medical documents for the surgical condition you are treating, together with earlier analyses and laboratory results for any co-occurring conditions. You should have a list of the medications you are taking, along with their dosages and administration methods. When you arrive at the hospital, report to the nurse at the front desk. You will also be asked to complete a health questionnaire. After the check-up, you will be allowed to go back home.
Before surgery, try to eat a well-balanced diet and break any bad eating habits you had prior to the procedure. Schedule additional consultations with a dietitian or nutritionist if you believe it is necessary. Obesity increases the risk of more serious postoperative surgical and general complications. Try your best to quit smoking. Every day you refrain from smoking before surgery is beneficial to your respiratory system. Smokers are more likely to have respiratory problems after treatment. Try to maintain a daily routine of strolls or brisk walks up until the operation day. Aerobic exercises are good for your cardiovascular system.
Maintain personal hygiene by washing your hands, body, and hair. Other than the shampoo and shower gel you are already using, avoid using any other cosmetics. It is forbidden to paint your nails. Eat dinner until 19:00. Beverages can be consumed until bedtime but not past midnight. Try to get a good night's sleep the night before the operation.
Prior to the operation, you must refrain from consuming any food or drink in the morning.
If your doctor has instructed you to take any tablets, please take them with a sip of water in the morning. During your shower, only use mild antiseptics and avoid using any cosmetics. Dress comfortably and replace any optical lenses with glasses. Remove any metal objects or jewellery, including piercings. The use of electric knives during surgery can result in burns to the body.
Please leave any valuables at home and avoid carrying large amounts of cash. Bring along any prescribed medications, personal care products, and aids such as glasses, hearing aids, or dentures, as well as your favourite magazines or books.
While you may drive yourself to the hospital, it is advisable to have someone else drive you there.
Following liver or pancreas surgery, you will spend the initial night in the intensive care unit. As you gradually recover, you will be transferred to a hospital ward.
On the first day after the procedure, you should be fully conscious and able to sit and stand up with assistance from a physician. Nausea due to medication and pain are the most frequent non-surgical complications in the immediate post-operative period. If you have any concerns or complaints, please discuss them with your doctor or nurse.
During the recovery process, the surgeon will progressively reintroduce food depending on your condition. Your physiotherapist will advise you on physical activities to perform while in bed and on the ward to aid in your recovery. The medical staff will inform you of your discharge for home treatment one day in advance.
Patient information can be obtained from the nurse, the on-call anaesthetist, or the operating surgeon.
Upon admission to the hospital, the person accompanying you will be provided with telephone numbers and contact hours for the staff.
Hospital-specific rules apply to visits, and visitors are not permitted in the intensive care unit.
Regarding wound care, stitches can be removed at any regular clinic or Euromedik hospital 12 to 14 days after the operation. After being discharged, the wound is wrapped for two to three days.
Routine check-ups are typically performed 30 days after the operation, with the first check-up being free of charge for the patient.
